IoT, Internet of Things, is defined as the networking of devices and their communication with each other. For this purpose, the devices, referred to as smart devices, are given their own identity within a network and are provided with electronic intelligence. This makes it possible to remotely control or simply automate a wide range of applications.

In general, we distinguish between IoT applications in the private and industrial sectors. In the private sphere, the terms smart home and connected cars have become established. For intelligent use, everyday objects are networked with each other. For example, kitchen appliances, thermostats or light switches can be controlled and programmed via smartphone. In the industrial environment, the focus is on connecting machines and systems to automate production processes.

Especially the increasing productivity, the improvement of quality by avoiding errors of a manual data entry and the easy processing of large amounts of data cause industrial companies to invest in IoT connectivity to optimize their production processes.

With the IoT module and the IoT box, Odoo offers an intelligent solution for connecting smart devices to the ERP system.

Using the IoT box, it is possible to connect devices such as a camera, a measuring tool, a foot switch or a printer directly to Odoo and transfer their data to the ERP system. These devices are connected to the IoT box via the USB, HDMI, serial port, WiFi or Bluetooth interfaces. The IoT box itself is connected to Odoo via Ethernet connection or WiFi.

If we now want to connect the IoT box to Odoo, we simply switch it on and navigate to the IoT module in Odoo. Using the scan button, we connect the IoT box, which is connected to the network via an Ethernet connection. For the connection via WiFi we follow the instructions in Odoo.

Once the IoT box is connected to Odoo, we can connect our smart devices. The IoT module provides us with an overview of each connected IoT box as well as all devices connected to the IoT box. We can easily see, which interface the devices are connected to Odoo, and in which production or quality process they are integrated.

By connecting a camera, we can capture images during a quality inspection and document them in the inspection process without uploading the images separately to the ERP system. The connection of measuring tools offers a similar functionality. The automatic transfer of measured values from the quality inspection avoids manual entries in the system, thus possible incorrect entries to ensure flawless data.

To optimize the production process, we have the option to connect a foot switch. The foot switch ensures that the production employees can use their hands for the actual production and do not have to switch between production and input in the ERP system. By stepping on the foot switch, the employee automatically switches to the next production step in Odoo.

For labeling the products after completed production, we can also connect a printer to Odoo. Odoo assigns serial numbers to the manufactured products, which are printed directly on the product label. This ensures a clear assignment of serial number and product.

In order to be able to integrate our smart devices into the manufacturing or quality processes, we make a simple configuration in the corresponding module. As an example, we define a quality inspection point in which the measurement of a manufactured product or product component is carried out by means of a measuring tool. We specify which device is to be used for the measurement and define standard and tolerance values.

We can now perform the measurement in the test process. The measured value is automatically transferred to Odoo and documented there. If the measured value is outside the defined standard and tolerance range, a predefined message appears. After successful measurement, we go to the next test point or the test process is completed.

With Odoo version 13, numerous improvements have also been made to the IoT module and its functionality. In the process, Odoo ensures https compliance to guarantee a tap-proof data transfer. For faster connection of the IoT box, an IP range can also be specified within which the available device is searched. The overview of available smart devices also shows which devices are currently connected. Furthermore, the IoT module has been integrated into the multi-company capability. If an IoT box is assigned to a specific company, its connected smart devices are only available in this company.

Detached from the production or quality processes in the industrial sector, we can also use the Odoo IoT for the connection at the point of sale. Here, we have the option to connect a complete checkout system including cash register, barcode scanner, scales, payment terminal and receipt printer and integrating it into Odoo.

In conclusion, we can state that Odoo with its IoT applications offers a wide range of possibilities to increase productivity and optimize quality in the industrial sector. Odoo will likely continue to focus on this. Whether, and to what extent IoT will be integrated into other business processes, as has already happened in the point of sale, remains to be seen.
